Folklorists study how stories, jokes, and beliefs spread through communities, evolving with each retelling. Internet memes are folklore at the speed of light — cultural artifacts that mutate, recombine, and die in cycles measured in days rather than generations.

Like traditional folklore, memes encode shared values, anxieties, and humor. The specific image or format matters less than the underlying template — the repeatable structure that invites participation. A good meme format is a sentence with blanks: anyone can fill in the specifics, but the structure carries the meaning.

Dismissing memes as trivial ignores their function: they are how internet culture processes events, negotiates meaning, and builds community. They are the folk songs of the digital age, and they deserve the same serious attention that folklorists give to oral traditions.
